Scout - Maps
Introduction:
To be able to autoroute with a Garmin GPS (turn by turn directions) you need either the City Select or City Navigator Maps. Since 2006/2007 Garmin integrated their products and for all current versions the correct maps are the City Navigator maps. Topo or other maps cannot be used for autorouting and are not compatible with e.g. the routes we provide for our Brevet series.
Is is important to notice that MapSource is not a map itself. MapSource is the program that manages maps, waypoints, routes and tracks. It does transfer maps from the computer to the GPS. MapSource updates are for free on the Garmin webpage. As of Jan 07 the current version of MapSource is V6.11.6.
Maps on the other hand cannot be updated for free. Maps are usually updated annually and Garmin (like any other GPS and map manufacturer) charge a update price for it. As of Jan 2007 the current versions of the maps are:
North America: City Navigator North America v8
Europe: City Navigator Europe v9
If you use our Brevet routes it is important that you use the correct route for you map. We usually post the Brevet information for the current version of the map and for last years version. This means as of Jan 07 we post information for v8 and v7 of City Navigator North America. The City Select v7 is 100% compatible with the City Navigator v7 in regards of our Brevet information.
NT verions:
Garmin just recently introduced NT versions of their maps e.g. City Navigator North America v8 NT. If you only have current Garmin units (ending with a x e.g. 76csx, 76cx, 60csx or 60cx) you can use the NT version. The NT version is using a compressed format of the map. The memory card can actually hold approx. 2 x the map size compared to the non NT version.
The older Garmin units 76cs, 60cs (non x units) are not compatible with the NT version.
How to transfer maps to your GPS:
Important note:
Each time you transfer a map segment or several map segments to your unit, the unit will erase all previous loaded maps and only maps you will have in the unit is the last one loaded. People are used to e.g. have 20 waypoints on their unit, select 1 waypoint in MapSource and transfer it to the unit. The unit will add waypoints, routes and tracks.
Again, not so on maps. If you had 20 map segments loaded on to your unit and select you transfer 1 map segment, you will only have 1 map segment loaded in the unit and not 21.
Therefore I recommend to load maps seperate in the unit and not together with waypoints, routes and tracks. For most people you can load the maps around your home and only have to change the maps if you plan to travel.
