Scout - Configuration

Configuration:

I realize that there are a lof of settings. After all it's one of the reasons why I like Garmin. It is very flexible in the layout of your pages and the fields you use. In meeting with other people I realized that this is where most people struggle. This is why you find the settings here in detail. Even so seems like a lot to you, don't worry too much about it. It only has to be perfomred once.

These are screen prints for the configuration for a Garmin 76csx. These settings are useful for bicycle riding (especially Brevets) and car driving. This is what I personally use and found useful with extensive use of a GPS over the last years. I realize that settings could vary due to personal likings and you might be very happy with other settings. Feel free to do so. I try to comment on why I i decided to use certain settings.

These settings also apply exactly to the Garmin GPSMap 60csx and with the exception of the compass and Altimeter to the 60cx and 76cx. The Garmin GPSMap 60c, 60cs, 76c and 76cs will have very similar screens.

General settings:

These are the general settings found in the setup:

To get info configuration hit <MENU> <MENU>, select 'Setup' and hit <ENTER>

We will now take a look at each of these configuration menues. Select the individual entry and <ENTER>. Once you are in a submenu you can always go one level back with <QUIT>

System Setup

  • GPS:
Shows the state of your GPS. Usually GPS Off or Normal. I don't recommend 'Battery Saver'. Should you loose position, you would like to regain it as soon as possible.
  • WAAS/EGNOS
Disabled: Less battery drain - better experience in keeping lock. Difference in accuracy for car or bicycle insignificant
  • Battery Type
I recommend using NiMH batteries. But you need to adjust this for the battery type you are using.
  • Proximity Alarms
Make sure to set in to 'On'. I use proximity alarms for known hazards on Brevets.

Display Setup

  • Display Mode
Personal preference: I like to use 'Daytime' at all times. If you set it to 'Auto' it will change the display at nighttime to 'Nighttime' mode.

Interface Setup

  • USB:
Shows usually 'Not Connected'. In my case I had a USB connection to the computer and therefore it showed 'Connected'.
  • USB Mass Storage
Use this to read directly from the MicroSD Memory Card e.g. I keep recording all tracks onto the card and every once a while I transfer them to the computer.

Tones Setup

  • The different tones are personal preference. I would recommend 'Key Beep' to be off.

Page Sequence Setup

  • These are pages I use paging through the GPS while I am riding. Paging through the different screens you can use the <PAGE> key to go forward in sequence and the <QUIT> key to page backwards. The 'Map' page and the 'Trip Computer' page are the pages I use most during riding.
  • If you have a page that is not on here, select it, hit <ENTER>, select 'Remove', hit <ENTER>
  • To add a page, select 'Add Page', <ENTER>, select page, <ENTER>
  • The easiest for this page could be to just 'Clear All' pages and than adding them in the sequence as shown above. The sequence is important!

Map Setup - Detail 1

  • It is important for autorouting to have the 'Lock On Road' set to 'On'.

Map Setup - Detail 2

Map Setup - Detail 3

  • Again, most of this are personal preferences. I set 'Map Points' to 300ft to avoid clutter. This means to map points of interest will only be shown if zoom in to 300ft or more.

Map Setup - Detail 4

Map Setup - Detail 5

  • Here you can see which maps are currently loaded into the GPS. You can scroll <UP> and <DOWN> the list. You can select or deselect a map segment with <ENTER>.
  • If you have more than one map set loaded e.g. City Navigator and Topo, you can select which one you want to use:
If you hit the <MENU> key from here, you can select which map set to hide or show.

Map Setup - Detail 6

  • The symbols I use to post bike rides is from the Garmin symbol set

Routing Setup - Detail 1

  • If your use is bicycle and especially for Brevets you should use'Guidance Method' as 'Prompted'. This will provide you a pop up window when you start routing a route and you can select 'Follow Road' or 'Off Road' .
  • If you use mostly for car you could use 'Follow Road' as your 'Guidance Method'.
  • As a change from previous years you always should select 'Faster Time' for the 'Follow Road Method'. Some maps especially in northern Florida do not route correctly with 'Shorter Distance' and 'Bicycle'
  • Select the 'Follow Road Options' and hit <Enter> to get to Routing Setup - Detail 2

Routing Setup - Detail 2 - for bicycle

  • These are settings used for used for bicycle riding and especially used for Brevets. If you miss a turn, the GPS will bring another pop up (prompted) and ask you if you want to reroute. The default is not to reroute, which is compliant with the RUSA rules, where you have to back to the point where you left the route and continue from there on the correct route.

Routing Setup - Detail 2 - for car

  • For car riding you usually want the GPS to recalculate the route to your selected destination automatically.

Geocache Setup

Marine Setup

Time Setup

  • Select the according 'Time Zone'

Units Setup

Heading Setup

Calibration Setup

  • This screen is only available in the models with a sensor (cs, csx)
  • If you use the compass you should calibrate it after each battery change
  • This is more important for hiking, rather than for bicycling or car driving. With speeds more than 5mph I use the GPS heading instead of compass (see Heading Setup screen)

Altimeter Setup

Welcome Message Setup

  • I entered my name and telephone number
  • It will show up when you turn on the unit
  • It will help when you meet with other people having a GPS to identify yours

Jumpmaster Setup

  • I left this on default value
